About us

This is Sir Hippopotopants (Sir Hippo for short).

He was used by the Bidyogo people in Guinea-Bissau as a throne for their tribal leader and for ceremonial use. He was inspired by the wild salt water hippos native to the Bissagos islands. The area that is now Guinea-Bissau was colonized by the Portuguese empire from the 16th century through 1973.

Fast forward to 2015, during a post-Christmas trip to Portugal, we found Sir Hippo in a small antique shop on an old Lisbon street. Fascinated by his connection to both the old world and the new, along with his regal appearance, we brought him home with us to New York.

For us, Sir Hippo captures our love for travel, history, and culture. We're generally pretty boring people, living the corporate rat race in NYC, but our one escape is traveling the world one city at a time.

Like most urban dwellers, we appreciate good food and drink and believe that knowing where it came from enhances the experience. Coffee is the best expression of our passions as it embodies the land, people, and history of its origin.
